how to change the color of someone's shirt

You are going to start by searching for an image in google, or any other search engine. You want to be sure you click on search tools, and select the size-large option, so that the image will be clear in photoshop. When searching, the best picture will be of either a full body, or at least the whole shirt is in view, and you want the shirt to be mainly one color.

Once you save the image somewhere, you will open photoshop. Then go to file-open, and open up your image.

Next, you’re going to want to convert the background layer to a regular layer. You do so by double clicking on the layer, and when a new layer option box pops up, name it whatever you would like, then click ok.

You want to now get into a tool that will be easy for tracing the outline of the shirt. I used the magnetic lasso tool because it clings to what you are tracing (to the best of its abilities).

Now, you will outline the shirt. Be sure to get any areas the shirt is shown, even if it is very small. You don’t want it to be a different color later. Also, be sure to avoid but tracing around where a body part, like a hand or finger, could be covering up part of the shirt. This is so that you don’t change the color of that finger as well. If the shirt is in two pieces like mine, its ok. Just close the path, then while holding down shift (if on a mac), you can start a new path for the other half of the shirt without loosing what you have already done.

You are now going to enter a layer quick mask. You do this by cicking on the square with the circle inside (the bottom left corner, second from the bottom). As you can see, the red is not covering the shirt. That is NOT what you want. So you must go to the select tab, and click on inverse. You should then have the shirt covered with the red paint.

Next, you want to clean up the edges a little. To do that you will be using both the paintbrush tool, and the eraser tool.
When using the paintbrush (image on the left), you will need to color in any areas where the shirt is not covered in red.
With the eraser (image to the right), any stray red marks not covering the shirt, but covering other parts of the picture need to be erased.

Now you need to exit the quick mask. You do that simply by just clicking on the square with the circle inside again. Now, the shirt area should be selected with marching ants around it. Now decide on the color you want to change the shirt to. Select it, and then using the paint bucket, fill the area of the selected shirt.

Now for the part you’ve been waiting for! On the right side of your screen, in the layers panel, there is a drop-down tab that should say “normal”; that is your blending options. Clock on that, and go through, clicking on different options, and see which one you like best. You can adjust the opacity as well, if you don’t like how intense it is. Above are some options I chose and liked best.

  3. After doing your tutorial, Its basic concept that we had learned at the beginning of the year was well done and well presented. Though I believe to further your tutorial, you should demonstrate both articles of clothing and recommend the quick masks as Shirts, Pants, and Shoes CAN be done and will need a certain mask in order to make them seem normal still. All in all though, you did well. congrats.

  4. The tutorial was very easy to follow, and none of the steps were complicated. The different techniques (than previously learned) were also appreciated.
